Roe v. Wade Anniversary

Today is the 37th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.  In this case, The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a woman’s right to terminate her pregnancy up to the point where the fetus becomes “viable”, that is: able to live outside the womb without artificial aid.  “Viability” is usually defined as 28 weeks gestation but can occur as early as 24 weeks.

The sad part of their decision is that legalizing abortion has done nothing to help the women seeking abortions.  Many have the abortion option thrust on them by their significant other, family members and/or friends.  Many see it as the only option available to them because raising a child would close doors of opportunity.  Many have not been fully educated on the risks associated with having an abortion.  And most, if not all, have never been told what the procedure actually does to the fetus.  Many have also not been told about the other option, giving their baby life and allowing that baby to be adopted.

Adoption supports the Constitutional rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness of both mother and baby.  Adoption allows couples who cannot conceive a child of their own to love and care for a baby whom they love no less than if they had given birth to that baby themselves.  Nine months is not too long to defer a bit of happiness in order to make the world so much richer by bringing a child into it.

The movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” shows a man how his world would not be the same if he hadn’t been born.  It should be required viewing before any woman gives consent to abort her child.  Our world truly is enriched by those around us, and by the lives we touch as well.  Let’s think about that today and pray that the world will come to its senses and stop the killing of unborn babies.

Dear Lord, protect those who cannot protect themselves.  Save them from the scourge of abortion.  Amen.

"Among those around you, apostolic soul, you are the stone fallen into the lake. With your word and your example, you produce a first circle, and it another, and another, and another, wider each time. Now do you understand the greatness of your mission?" St. Josemarie Escriva: The Way
